How do you configure a color laser printer for more vibrant and accurate colors?

For richer and more accurate colours when printing with a colour laser printer, proper calibration, appropriate settings for the type of paper and high-quality consumables are essential. These factors directly affect the final result. If any of them is not configured correctly, the printed colours may appear faded, shifted or different from what you expected. 

Why do colours on paper look different from those on the screen?

The difference is mainly due to the way the monitor and printer reproduce colours. The screen emits light, while in print, colour is perceived through light reflected from the paper.

The main differences between the two methods of colour reproduction are:

  • the screen uses the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) colour model – colours are created by emitting light, and combining all three channels at maximum intensity produces white;

  • the printer uses the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) colour model – colours are produced by toner applied to the paper, and mixing the colours produces a dark result;

  • the CMYK colour gamut is narrower than the RGB colour gamut – therefore, some of the bright and saturated shades you see on the monitor cannot be reproduced in exactly the same way on paper.

Because of this difference, converting from RGB to CMYK can change the saturation of certain colours, especially bright blue, green and orange shades. Appropriate printer settings help minimise this difference.

How to calibrate your colour laser printer? 

Most colour laser printers have a built-in automatic calibration function. It may be accessible from the device's control panel or through the manufacturer's software.

The procedure usually includes the following steps:

  1. Open the printer maintenance menu
    From the control panel or the manufacturer's application, such as HP Smart, Brother Utilities or the corresponding software for your model, find the maintenance or print quality settings.

  2. Start colour calibration
    Look for a function named „Color Calibration“ or „Auto Calibration“. The printer will perform the necessary checks and adjustments for colour reproduction.

  3. Wait for the calibration to finish
    Do not interrupt the process. During calibration, the device adjusts the way the four toner colours – cyan, magenta, yellow and black – are used.

  4. Calibrate again after replacing a toner cartridge
    Recalibrating after installing a new cartridge helps maintain consistent colours in subsequent printouts.

  5. Perform periodic calibration during intensive printing
    With frequent use, periodic calibration helps maintain print quality and colour accuracy.

The exact method for starting calibration depends on the printer brand and model, so the names and locations of the settings may vary.

Select the correct paper type in the driver settings

The selected paper type determines how the printer adjusts the printing process for the media. If the selected setting does not match the paper in the tray, the result may be paler than expected or overly saturated:

Selecting the correct option takes only seconds in the print dialogue box, but it is one of the factors with the most direct impact on the final result.

Which driver settings improve colour accuracy?

In addition to the paper type, the driver may offer additional settings for managing print quality and colours. The available options and their names depend on the specific model.

Some of the settings you may want to check include:

  • colour correction mode (Color Correction) – the „Automatic“ setting is suitable for general documents when manual colour management is not required;

  • toner darkness (Toner Darkness) – a higher value can make colours denser, but increasing it excessively does not always result in better print quality;

  • print resolution – a higher resolution can help reproduce fine details and colour transitions more accurately;

  • balance between colour channels – on models that offer this function, manually adjusting cyan, magenta and yellow allows you to correct a specific colour deviation.

These parameters are usually found in the quality or colour sections of the printer properties. It is advisable to check them during the initial setup and then change them only when necessary.

What role do consumables play in colour accuracy?

Toner quality also affects colour saturation and consistency. Even a correctly calibrated printer cannot fully compensate for differences in the characteristics of the consumables being used.

Original toner cartridges provide more consistent toner characteristics and help ensure even colour reproduction from page to page. Consumables with inconsistent quality may result in differences in saturation when printing the same file.

When is replacing the printer the more logical solution?

Calibration, choosing the correct paper and adjusting the driver settings can significantly improve colour print quality. With older devices, however, the capabilities of the printing mechanism itself may limit the results that can be achieved through settings alone.
